Why we enjoy being a family run business !

Running a small family business comes with its unique challenges, but also its incredible rewards. As the 6-week summer holiday rolled around, like many families, we had to juggle work with childcare. But at Windy Washers Essex and Essex Garden Cutters, we took a different approach everyone pitched in, including our mini mascots! This summer turned into a fun learning experience for our kids, giving them the chance to spend time with us at work while learning valuable life skills.

Oakley’s Day Out with Windy Washers Essex

Chris, our director, had his son Oakley join him on the road for a day of window cleaning. Dressed in his mini version of the Brooks Outdoors uniform, Oakley was eager to learn. He spent the day working alongside his dad, Chris, observing the ins and outs of window cleaning and even getting hands-on with the tools! Oakley’s favorite part? Getting paid at the end of the day, of course!

The experience not only gave Oakley an understanding of how hard work pays off, but also sparked his interest in the family business. By the end of the day, he was beaming with pride, showing off his new skills and his first "wage." Oakley has already decided he wants to come back for the next school break he’s well on his way to becoming part of the team one day!

Katy’s Office and Garden Adventure with Essex Garden Cutters

Lauren’s daughter Katy also got involved, helping her mum in the office and out in the field with Essex Garden Cutters. In her Brooks Outdoors uniform, Katy helped send emails, manage appointments, and even went out on a full gardening day. She had a blast learning about plants, tools, and how a day in the life of Essex Garden Cutters runs. Like Oakley, she was thrilled to receive her own wage at the end of the day, and she couldn’t wait to spend it on a well-deserved shopping trip!

Katy loved every moment, from sending emails to pulling weeds, and just like Oakley, she can’t wait to help out again. Our customers loved seeing her cheerful presence, and we know she brought a smile to many faces!

Why We’re Thankful for a Family Business

Having a family-run business has given us the chance to involve our kids in what we do. It’s more than just work it’s teaching them about responsibility, hard work, and the value of money. Our mini mascots learned so much this summer, and we’re grateful for the opportunity to pass on these lessons. Plus, seeing them so excited about what we do is a huge motivation for us to keep working hard!

One day, Oakley and Katy might officially join the team, but until then, we’re looking forward to the next half-term break when we can welcome them back for another fun-filled work experience.

We feel incredibly lucky to be able to run a family business, where moments like these are possible. Our children are the reason we push ourselves every day, and we’re so thankful to our amazing customers who welcomed them with open arms.

Looking Forward to the Future

As a small business, these moments are what make us strong. We love that we can involve our family, teach them life skills, and create lasting memories. Here’s to many more summers, school breaks, and days spent together as a family!

Until then, keep an eye out for our mini mascots Oakley and Katy because you never know when they might be out helping their mums and dads with Windy Washers Essex and Essex Garden Cutters!
